Bertie V. Holloway Pollock

• After high school I married classmate, Tyler Haack. We have a beautiful daughter named Tamara Vojai Haack. Unfortunately, my first marriage ended shortly after her birth.
• I sold advertising for local newspapers for several years and owned BVH Advertising in Ontario, CA for several years.
• Ten years later I meet and married my second husband Donald Pollock. After we married, we moved back to Downey.
• While I was volunteering for the Downey Fire Dept. I decided to go back to college and studied First Safety at Rio Hondo College. I earned a California Fire Marshal Certificate. I discovered a love for helping others plan for disasters.
• Don and I started a small business called California Disaster Planning and Earthquake Preparedness.
• In 1995 Don was diagnosed with MS and he was forced to retire. We purchased a motorhome and spent the next year and half traveling across our wonderful country.
• After spending time in Paducah KY at my parent’s home, we made the decision to move there. I love the four seasons, green everywhere you look, big beautiful white pillory clouds and blue skies. Sunrises and sunsets are always picture perfect.
• In 2000 I walked into Lourdes Hospital to visit a niece who had given birth to a baby boy. She had no place to go so I invited her to come stay with Don and I. Little did I know God had a plan for me and that little boy named Brian Cody. I officially adopted him in 2002. Don lost his battle with MS in 2014.
• My daughter married Chris Hoisington on March 14, 2015. My first grandchild was born in June 2016, Katherine Vojai, and my second, Everett Riley in April 2019. Brian Cody is now 22 and just lives 1.3 miles from mom. He is dating a young lady that has a daughter Ellie age 6. She calls me grandma.
• I have been working as a Loan Signing Agent / Notary Public for the past 20+ years. I have a little home out in the country that offers me plenty of peace and quiet. I enjoy gardening, sewing, crafts and traveling. I spend as much time as I can in CA since, that is where Tamara, Chris and my grandchildren live.
• I have been a member of 12 Oaks Baptist Church for many years and love my church family. I am the costume designer and seamstress for my church.
• I have truly enjoyed working on our 50th class reunion. I have had the opportunity to speak with so many classmates and hear what they have been up to over the past 50 years. I can’t wait to see them in person and give them a hug. Thank you, Bryan Larson, for asking me to help with this event.

I am #5 of 8 in the Holloway Klan. Starting in 1971 there was a Holloway kid in every grade at BHS for six years. Rodney being the oldest and Charles being the youngest. Our little house on Bellflower Blvd. was always packed with BHS classmates. Classmates today still say they remember me because the “BATMOBILE” was in our garage for weeks while my father built the enclosed trailer that housed it. Kids lined up down the block just to come see it. If not for that reason they remember everybody coming over to building floats on my father’s large trailer for the Bellflower Parade.
My junior year I was in Pep Club, Track Boosters and was in love with Tyler Haack. I would do just about anything to be around him. I hung out with his stepsister Debbie Hyder and that was my invitation to dinner at their house. I went so far as to find out Tyler was taking Wood Shop and so I signed up and took the class. Kind of nice I was the only girl in the class. I built an awesome hope chest and a really cool jewelry box. I have them both still today.
My best friend was Jeany Hopper/Paulsen. We ran around together from the time she started at BHS until today. After I moved to Kentucky and Tamara finished University of Louisville, she moved back to CA and lived with Jeany until she married in 2015. She is also my grandchildren’s God Mother. Back in the day, she and I would go to church and then go out and egg someone’s truck because it was parked at some girl’s house. We may or may not of toilet papered a few houses. I will never tell and I am sure she will never mention it to anyone either. She has always been a friend you can count on.
I attended Cerritos College my Senior year; I was in such a hurry to start my life and move away from home. I worked at Jim Snow Ford in Cerritos with Barbara McWold and we got our first apt. together.
I graduate with our class on June 17, 1974. That was a night I will never forget. Tyler and I were officially a couple.
My only regret is that I wish I hadn’t been in such a hurry to grow up.
